I Luv Beijing Opera

MWAHAHAAHHAHA!
Look its my Hematology Teacher during lab today! Except picture him with less hair. Hematology is the study of blood... mmm... and nope it doesn't make my stomach wrench or anything but the course is quite a feat. Besides a crazy professor with a very sarcastic and dry sense of humor which I admit keeps me awake in class the course is fairly interesting. We got all these machines doing everything. Computers, calculator, lab equipment, cars, airplanes practically everything! Our teachers are dedicated to make us learn the good old fashion manual way which is very very tedious... but think about it if the machines were all the go ka-boom at least I can tell you if you have normal white and red blood cell count.

That's the cymbals and gongs associated with the Beijing Opera. Above are pictures taken from one of the many Beijing Operas in the world. Such as how the Greeks have the great tragedies and comedies, how the West has their opera in the soprano and alto voices the Chinese have this thing called Beijing Opera. If you're not use to it, it might sound jarring because they speak in fast and high pitch voices or very slow and low pitch voices.


Well I've never been the biggest fan of them but I did love their wonderful costumes and jerky movements. Everything they did was exaggerated because back in the old days there was no such thing as T.V and people sit by the hundreds into these shows. I did my own version above which I adore and I've decided to make more of them because the costumes are so unique! Check them out in my store!

Sleep in Sunday

Does that look like you? All curled up and warm happy in dream land and snoring up a storm? Well I envy you... lolol... it was raining this morning and perfect to sleep in alas my little brother was screaming at the top of his lungs that he did not want to go to his weekly tutoring at school. That blissful person is my sister! Anita! She comes back for the weekends and works then goes back to Long Island for college. Ah what a hard worker.
That's like my brother and to think when he was a baby he was the quietest nicest baby ever. He was so quiet when he was propped up on the couch my sister's friend almost sat on him and stopped when he went "Waah!" softly. I guess seeing a huge butt coming your way would make anyone cry out. Alas I am awake and a bit groggy... thanks to all the people that commented... woot! Yes Jason you know you want those etsy baked goodies... MMM!!

Well i made some new nifty items that won't put for a couple of days which are my brand spanking new Art Cards!
Yeah look at those beauties. There are these things called ACEO which are really small art cards for people like me who have no space for the giant Monets and Picassos works on my wall. It's like a gallery in your pocket or you can make them into gift tags for that extra zing in case you brought someone a crappy gift. Here's the wikipedia definetion http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artist_trading_cards. Mine are smaller being just 3.5" x 2" out of blank business cards.

Chilly Fall Day

Brrr... its might chilly here in NYC looks like fall is in full swung. I'm not fond of the cold but then again I would take cold weather over those pesky mosquitoes any day. For some reason they love biting me more so then the rest of my family or friends... and well that's just unfair.
That's like me during the summer and especially around August though I'm not a guy but the red shorts still apply to me. Die mosquitoes... DIE! My dad did buy some type of tennis racket bug zapper thing and it works like a charm unfortunately I'm afraid to shock myself so... not help for me during the night. I don't want to accidently bzzt myself.

Well good news besides mosquitoes dying... is that I finally finished another custom order for my sister's friends. Her last name is Ayeo and she loves cherries. At first i thought hmm.. maybe the cherry stems should be green but i already drew then brown... hope no one brings that up. Its pretty large and so it should be since she's carrying textbooks with it. I double machine sewed everything though I might want to reinforce the reinforced handles already because those are always the ones to go first.

Wedding Blues

Whose getting married? Not me... though not like I don't think about it but I feel its way to early for little old me! So why bring up the topic of weddings? Well my coworker has commissioned me to make a custom wedding scene that has both the tradition Chinese wedding and the American Wedding since she is of both cultures. It was indeed a daunting feat. Here's how it went...
First off i start with smooth Bristol paper... my favorite kind because the texture is smooth and also good to write with such as markers which is my medium of choice but I'm also really into charcol and pastels! The actual size of this was 9 inches by 13 inches including the half an inch margin i frame the piece with. The plan was to create 4 panels depicting how the wedding ceremonies would be... 2 dedicated each one in rotating order. I wasn't drawing this one out she and I talked it out and it would be a collage... i suppose... since it was my idea and I wanted to play outside my safe zone of drawing.The red parts were the Chinese weddings and the white one was the American wedding. I used old red envelopes from over the years and picked and choose certain ones depending on what it displayed and the texture. The great thing about red envelopes (which are used to give money to people during Chinese New Year) is that there are countless of designs and most are embossed with gold. Those browns are the begining of the doors and where the walls meet the floor. Here comes the tricky part... the details of the buildings and... the people... can't have a wedding without people...
So the people I hand drawn and hand cut and placed in either pews or a table depending which panel they were in. I had started putting in small details such as the flowers in the black vases with the "ribbons" hanging down on the church walls. Black is not the usual color for a wedding for either cultures but i googled some pictures of church weddings and there was this one that was lovely and used black and it didn't have a morbid feel to it so I try to captured that. She wanted flowers so i added in the white flowers surrounded with an aura of pink that i cut out from some origami paper. Four and a half hours later...
This is the final product I had alot of fun doing the bride and groom. I was plannign to make them wear half Chinese and Half American clothing but i thought it was more fun and easier on my part to intergrate them. The bride's top is red as tradition of Chinese with golden embossed flowers hanging down (though it should've been a phoenix but there was none I could find.) The white dress and everything else is from folded crepe paper and it gave it this soft texture. The groom is wearing all white with a red trimmings. I created a boarder of the remaining bristol paper. It took a while but i love how it turned out... I hope she likes it.

Where's my Prince?

Where for thou prince of mine? I was hopping around blogs today and sometimes life gives me a much needed nudge. I realized there are a lot of things in life we take for granted and sometimes we're like those princesses in towers waiting for a hero. Thus i made this couple of a princess and silent hero for my shop. Though i don't necessary believe we NEED a hero and we all have that I can do it myself, power to myself mentality... but sometimes during those times you feel too weak to push yourself up... a hero comes along with the strength to carry on (LoloL i know thats from the Mariah Carey song Hero). Sometimes its okay to rely on that someone because you know that one day someone would be weak and you will be the one lending the hand and become a hero.

To the hero inside us and those around us... keep on trucking!

Think outside the Box!

After waiting and having trouble with the color printer I created my newest item in my shop! It's like a note card/post card of a pencil box i made for my buddy Cuong. He had a lot of pens and pencils he "took" from work so i promised to make him a pencil box and I did! I took some pictures and realized how cute it was. By combining the two pictures and a catchy phrase that i think everyone should say to themselves in a while I made this little nifty item. I'm planning to make stationary versions of things I sold and things I gave to others. I'm not planning to make doubles of any of my origami or bags.

The contest is open for upcoming weddings set next year from January 1, 2009 to December 31st 2009! You’ll be able to get up to 100 customizable wedding favors similar to my Meekiyu Love Knot dolls at $2 each instead of $6 that i usually charge (for example 100 = $200 Paypal). This includes shipping (LIMITED TO THE US =/ sorry) and individual packaging in either small wedding favor boxes or bags (you choose from a selection i will provide)! Keep in mind that everything is going to be handmade by me using my own time and poor fingers it can take from two weeks to a month for me to finish after i get the OK on the designs.

All you have to do write a short paragraph about why you want/need these favors and why you guys should win the contest! If you don’t mind just post it as a comment on my blog! You have from now to November 2nd!

I will randomly select a couple out of a hat and announce the winner.
